Sergey Gussiev Orenburgsky, translated from the Russian by Nina Nikolaevna Selivanova
Longmans, Green & Co, London, 1928
First edition, second printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21 x 14cm, 421pp
"This is the prose epic of Russia in the years between 1915 and 1920. The characters move against a background of mobs and fire, of war and spiritual yearning, and are often drawn with considerable literary power and understanding of Russian psychology. Some of the chapters, like those in which the giant Vavila, the symbol of Russian peasantry, meets the young Leva, or that in which the White officer, Koronin, is forced to pass death sentence on the man who twice saved his life, might claim to belong to the best in Russian literature".
The book is in good condition, with some tanning to the pages but in strong readable condition. The dustwrapper is heavily worn with loss to the head of the spine and chipped to the edges but is now within a protective sleeve.
