“Cars” is a series of 49 silkscreens and drawings by Warhol, commissioned by Mercedes-Benz in 1986. Hans Meyer, a German art dealer, commissioned the first painting, of the 300SL coupe, to celebrate the 1986 centenary of the invention of the motor car. When Mercedes-Benz management saw the result, it commissioned the entire series, which was to track the evolution of its designs from the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen to the Mercedes-Benz C111..
