Size: 26.5 cm tall.

Condition:  An old repair to a break on one leg (see image). Otherwise in very good condition. Short firing crack to front of base.

This is a really unusual and most charming figure of an Edwardian girl, cleverly made in terracotta clay, decorated with painted slip and fired unglazed.

It is by Romola Jane Farquharson, a potter who was also married for a time to the well known sculptor John Bunting. Bunting studied at the Royal College of Art and in the 1950s taught at Ampleforth College with pupils including Anthony Gormley and Martin Jennings.  We have very little information about Romola herself, although we have seen other examples of her work.

This sculpture was acquired by the Derbyshire Schools Museum service and remained with them until recently when they sold their collection.  The service was very forward in its thinking and bought a wide variety of original art, often at venues such as the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
