Poster created by Benjamin Rabier in
1928 to promote laying hens.
In the image, a hen and a rooster are among eggs. The hen is brooding. In the background, we see a snowy house to support the fact that “layers” can produce a large quantity of eggs even in subzero temperatures.
Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939) was a French illustrator and caricaturist famous for his drawings of anthropomorphized animals, notably The Laughing Cow. Born in La Roche-sur-Yon, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers. Rabier began in the 1890s with political and social caricatures, but he is best known for his illustrations of children's books. His emblematic character, The Laughing Cow, was created in 1898.
