I have here for sale a rare book entitled THE ITALIAN VALLEYS OF THE PENNINE ALPS A Tour through all the Romantic and Less-Frequented "Vals" of Northern Piedmont, from the Tarentaise to the Gries by REV S W KING With Illustrations from the Author's Sketches, Maps, etc., published be John Murray, London, in 1858.  First edition.  This guide to the beautiful mountainous region of Piedmont includes a fold-out colour map at the back of the book showing the Italian Valleys of the Pennine Alps; plus two colour fold-out maps of Mont Blanc and Environs, and Monte Rosa and Environs, 11 full-page b/w plates, and 6 in-text b/w illustrations.

Navy blue textured cloth boards with a gilt illustration of a goat's head on the front board.  Marks and wear to the boards, particularly along the edges.  Gilt lettering on the spine.  Two pieces of navy blue leather have been stuck to most of the spine, the bottom of both boards and along the hinge of the rear board, and there are the remains of a small sticker at the top of the front board.  Brown endpapers with gift inscription on the front endpaper.  Minor tears along the edge of the fold-out map at the back of the book.  Light foxing to title page and last few pages, and ink stains on rear endpaper and page edges.  Both hinges slightly cracked but all pages are firm and the book is in good condition.  viii, 558 pages, plus publisher's catalogue 32 pages.  21.5 x 15 cm.
