Offered is this framed and matted antique certificate affirming that Charles Ansel Mooers was elected to be a member of the honor society Phi Kappa Phi in the University of Tennessee chapter. The certificate is dated 1920. There is an embossed blue fraternity seal.

Mooers was a well-known pioneering agricultural scientist who entered the University of Tennessee in 1890 and didn't retire until 1946. He lived to be 100, dying in 1970. This would make him approx. 50 years old at the time of his membership, but the society is open to faculty as well as students. Interestingly, according to his obituary, Mr. Mooers was a member of Tennessee's first intercollegiate football team.

The dark-painted wood frame is approx. 12 3/4" x 9 3/4". It and the matting appear to be contemporary to the certificate. The certificate is in very good condition, with no holes or tears visible. It has browned considerably, however. The wood frame is also in very good condition, with no damage, although there are some minor marks and wear. The glass has no damage, although there are some small areas of dirt on the inside; I have not taken the frame apart to clean it for fear of damaging it. The back is wired and ready to hang.

Please excuse the glare on the glass!
