It was not without a great deal of soul searching that Mrs. Sadie Blum decided to open the Rose Arbor Boarding House in Rhutabaga Ridge. She was a practical woman who saw a need for reasonably priced accommodations within her town. Certainly there were many individual cottages and houses that were perfect rentals for families. But for single folks who did not wish to be responsible for the upkeep of a house, there was nothing in town that would do. One had to seek lodging in Oroville.

And for Sadie herself, there was the desire to provide an income. She was widowed, left with a small egg nest that she knew would not provide for her needs indefinitely; the home she lived in was paid for and was far larger than she herself required. She could maintain a small area of her own, her bedroom and a small sitting room for her desk and personal use.

The kitchen was large enough for large meal preparations to be served in the adjoining dining room. Sadie and her late husband Theodore had acquired lots of simple but well made furnishings, some purchased and some handed down from their relatives. Now she found herself in a position to be extremely thankful for all God had blessed them with. She would need every piece, every linen and dish that He had provided. Sadie understood in her heart that all things belong to God anyway, and certainly folks were just stewards of those items. Now it seemed in some small way she could be a blessing to others. Those who had no home of their own could be comfortable within the walls of Rose Arbor.

Her own motherly tendencies would serve in good stead, welcoming those who perhaps were far from places they once called home. The more she thought about the venture the more clear it became that this was a grand idea. Sadie had been a bit lonely for some time herself, she knew what it felt like. This would give her an opportunity to do something truly worthwhile.

She studied her accounts and made lists, planned what was needed in the way of help. She could provide employment for perhaps one or two folks that needed jobs. She required a cleaning crew to begin with. In her own little way she could help boost the economy in delightful ways!

Sadie is tall and willowy, made from upcycled grey knit. She is 12" tall and played basketball in her younger years. These days the only basket she's making would be laundry baskets!
