A guitar pick given by Muddy Waters' guitarist Sammy Lawhorne to an Australian fan in 1973, with a photograph taken by the fan backstage at Waters's concert in Melbourne, Australia.

While best known as Muddy's guitarist, Lawhorn worked with other blues giants including John Lee Hooker, Otis Spann, Big Mama Thornton, Eddie Boyd, Roy Brown, James Cotton and Junior Wells.

The accompanying letter of authenticity notes:

In the mid 1950's I enjoyed a range of music, particularly blues music. I had recordings by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Big Bill Broonzy, Lightning Hopkins and others, prominent at the time.  I lived in the UK, but I knew a girl whose brother was a seaman, visiting America frequently. He brought back records by Junior Parker on the Sun label, Chess and Checker recordings by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Bo Diddley. He introduced me to Roy Brown and Wyonie Harris.  Eventually I did my own importing.  I migrated to Melbourne in 1964, my interest in music did not wane.

Sammy Lawhorn was in Muddy's band for the 1973 tour.  Sammyu was very jovial, forever humming and strumming his guitar.  Sammy gave me his pick when asked.  I think he would have given me a handfful if I had asked.  He seemed that generous!
Sincerely, Terrence McRann
