The official title of this book is CLERGY IN MARYLAND OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH SINCE THE INDEPENDENCE OF 1783. This copy is the 1860 First Edition published by James S. Waters in Baltimore in 1860. The author/compiler is Rev. Ethan Allen. The book is hardcover, 106 pages with pages 9-87 containing brief biographies of individual clergymen listed in chronological order of their service to each diocese. Other parts of the book contain an alphabetical listing of the dioceses and an alphabetical index of all the clergy named in the book.

On the front flyleaf is the following notation written by the book's original owner, "Ex Libris J. Stephenson, June, 1860." There is a J. Stephenson in the book's index. He was born in Ireland, ordained by Bishop Brownell in 1845, and came to Maryland from Missouri in 1850. He then served churches in Dorchester and Ellicott's Mills before going to Baltimore in 1854. He served two churches prior to the publication of this book: St. Paul's and St. Mary's.

This is an ex-library copy with expected card pocket and spine label. It was discarded by the library at the University of the South, Sewanee (Episcopal college and seminary in Tennessee) where I picked it up several years ago. The spine cover is missing, but the actual spine is still quite strong. An experienced bookbinder could easily repair this. Very limited rubbing wear to the rest of the cover. There are a couple of pages dog-eared at the bottom of the page, and most pages have foxing due to the book's age. However, there are no torn pages. Over the years a few people have lightly written in the margins, but it's the kind of writing with information that some genealogists would appreciate.  Overall, this book is in great shape to be 164 years old!!! It will be carefully packaged to insure safe shipping.
