Oliver Grimley exhibited widely throughout his long career, and he was an instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over six decades. Grimley’s unique combination of imagination and skill produced an incredibly varied repertoire. This painting has been compared in some respects to The Garden of Earthly Delights by the fifteenth century painter Hieronymus Bosch. Grimley was quoted as saying, “My ideas and sense of humor have their genesis in my belief that light ideas are often taken too seriously, and serious ideas are often taken too lightly. My compositions are criticisms of myself as part of mankind.” His works hang in a number of museums, including The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and The Philadelphia Museum of Art.
