... dating at a guess to around 1900 this is a fabulous Oak picture frame; a classic Edwardian frame design, with a delightful smooth inner border with raised beadline & a carved outer border with a classic Egg & Dart pattern (a popular classical motif meaning to symbolise life & death OR alternately a spear & a shield) the border frieze is a very agreeable russet brown with a wonderfully tactile patina & a fantastic tight oak grain with lots of interesting detail ~

... entirely constructed by hand you can still see the frame-maker's nails at the corners & this frame also comes with an impressive canted gilt slip with the frame which is entirely original & always a special feature to have ~

EDWARDIAN / VICTORIAN OAK FRAMES

... these types of frames are always superb quality, often referred to (mainly in the U.S.) as being 'Quarter-Sawn' OR 'Mission' due to the way the oak is cut across the grain resulting in super strong oak pieces that never warp & often with beautiful perfectly matching grain which fit seamlessly in the corner joints ~

The Edwardians, like the Victorians before them, were passionate about using frames such as this to show off a photo of a cherished family member sporting their Sunday best, this frame will also really suit a particular antique gravure or classical litho print as was the fashion, no doubt collected on a glamorous European 'Grand-tour' ~

... entirely constructed & mitred by hand with super-solid corners this is a wonderful early 20th Century Oak frame with a real sense of handcrafted Arts & Crafts style ~

... these Edwardian frames are a perfect blend of understated design and elegant craftsmanship. The smooth and tactile border, along with the elegant slip, adds a touch of sophistication and draws the eye into the picture. These frames are truly a work of art that enhances the beauty of any image they hold ~

... this frame will suit a certain picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one; it is certainly a frame that will grace any wall ~ it would also make a fabulous mirror!

Thank you for looking ~
