First Edition

A group of letters involving three individuals interested in St. Mark's Church and the Lay Co-Operation in Ministry movement: William Welch, a merchant, philanthropist, staunch Christian, community activist, and member of St. Mark's from its founding in 1832 to his death in 1878; Bishop Alonzo Potter, the 3rd Bishop of Pennsylvania from 1845 to 1865; and Rev. Dr. Daniel Sutter Miller, rector of St. Mark's from 1853 to 1871. In one of his letters to Potter, Welch provides a bleak picture of Frankford and hence the need for involving the laity more intimately in church affairs: "Frankford contains about ten thousand inhabitants, mostly operatives in manufactories. Infidelity has a stronger hold there, than in any parish of the same size, that I ever heard of; an eloquent and plausible infidel lecturer having poisoned the minds of very many against christianity, and especially against Christian churches and ministers. Liquor venders abound on every side; and there are several volunteer fire-companies, dissolute clubs, &c. Our Church was established in Frankford, after the ground had been well occupied by other christian bodies. The Church members are chiefly in very moderate circumstances; there is no debt on the property; and until the present year, when the Church has been greatly enlarged, its nett income from pew-rents and weekly collections (applicable to the Rector's salary) has not averaged six hundred dollars per annum" [from page 3]

Pamphlet is in Very Good Minus Condition: pages clean, tight, and unmarked; scattered light creasing, most notably on the back cover; front cover age-toned along the margins. Extremely scarce!
