DESCRIPTION:

This old hybrid has superlative quality and form and it could be argued that it is the best white crinum, but it certainly is one of the best ever  We have measured tall 3' scapes with up to 22 pure white, trumpet-shaped blooms that open successively over several days.   A mature bulb will send up successive blooms for a couple of months in the Spring.  This is another one of those "must have" crinum, a very fine plant.  We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids.

We like them so much that we have 10 Jumbo-sized bulbs planted in the front of our property in 3 flower beds along the street.  It is seed sterile, but the pollen is fertile and has been used to produce several outstanding new hybrids.  The mature bulbs produce new offsets each year, and the bulbs grow to over 5" in diameter.  They will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years.

BACKGROUND:

1886 cross of C. moorei X C. bulbispermum ‘Album’. Introduced as long ago as 1888, it is now common in gardens.  When C. moorei is bred to other crinum, whether striped or plain, the offspring usually develop self-colored flowers, rather than a milk and wine pattern.  Like the C. herbertii hybrids, these are hardy workhorses among crinums with many variations.

GROWING CONDITIONS:

This is a hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care.  It tolerates a wide range of soils and cool temperatures, at least to zone 7, with mulch.  Blooms late March- early June.  They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants.  They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry.

DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID:

You are bidding on a small-size bulb at least 21year old and about 1" in diameter that should bloom within 3 years.  Crinum do not like to be moved, so it often takes a year to "settle in."  Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November.  In the winter months the leaves may be absent.
