Has a plastic coated bottom to protect your paint for the most direct contact without direct contact. 

Anything more in the way of the magnet will compromise the magnetic draw putting your equipment in danger.

Note that using other than flat surface mounting, may pierce plastic.

I recommend when removing from a nice car surface, to NOT slide off to the side and remove, 

i suggest to leave buckle in mount, use as leverage and pry it off to the side 

so there is no sliding on the surface or damage to the protective plastic. 

I use it alot without damage to my car finish.
