Carnival glass is molded or pressed glass that always has a
shiny, metallic, 'iridescent' surface shimmer.
Carnival glass gets its iridescent sheen from the application of metallic salts while the glass is still hot from the pressing. A final firing of the glass brings out the iridescent properties of the salts, giving carnival glass the distinct shine it is known for.
Carnival glass has been known by many other names in the past: aurora glass, dope glass, rainbow glass, taffeta glass, and 'poor man's Tiffany'.
Carnival glass has a rich history in the USA. It started being made here in the early 1900's by the Fenton Glass Co.Very popular in the 1920"s. As popularity grew it eventually was produced around the world. It is still loved and is a very popular collectible today.
