Eric Clapton’s Gibson SG Fool

Eric Clapton’s 1964 Gibson SG,  commonly known as The Fool quickly became a cultural icon of the swinging 60’s and one of the first artistic impressions of psychedelia on a musical instrument. Widely recognised as the first art guitar created by artists, it evokes the magical years of the mid-late 60’s, with its drug fuelled culture and 1967’s Summer of Love.

Following the release of their first album Fresh Cream in 1966, Cream were making plans to tour the United States the following year and knew their debut must have maximum impact on their new American audience and enlisted the help of a pair of obscure Dutch artists who became known as The Fool. Having relocated from Ibiza to London in 1966, The Fool developed into an art collective, creating posters and designing clothing for leading bands. They were also responsible for painting the three-story mural on the side of The Beatles Apple store.
