George Harrison's Guitars

George paid £75 for this second hand Gretsch Duo Jet in 1961, later describing it as his ‘first good guitar.’ He played it whilst in Hamburg, at The Cavern Club, on tours of Europe and America in 1964 and on many Beatles recordings.

George acquired his Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean just as The Beatles were about to conquer the world. He used it on numerous recordings and live appearances throughout 1964 and then more prominently in 1965, notably on recordings of Ticket to Ride, Baby’s in Black, Mr Moonlight and I Feel Fine. It can also be seen in the opening sequence of their movie HELP!

The Gibson J-160E was only available from the United States in 1962 so George and John went together to collect their specially ordered examples on 10th September 1962 and put them to good use recording Love Me Do, With The Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night.

Purchased in 1963, this was George’s second Country Gentleman. It was his favourite guitar throughout 1963 and 1964 and can be seen during The Beatles’ second US tour, including their first Shea stadium concert in 1965.

The 360/12 was presented to George in February 1964 prior to The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Its’ distinctive sound is recognisable on most of the A Hard Days Night album and helped shape the sound of the 60’s.
