Boylston Antiques
is proud to present A Set of 3 Victorian Grain-Painted Cottage Chairs C. 1850-1900 A set of 3 grain-painted Victorian caned chairs. Paint appears to be original, as much flaking has occurred over the years, imparting a much distressed patina to these early chairs. · The chairs are grain-painted all over with a butter-creme color. · Dark brown highlights are painted around the perimeter of the crest rail, on the lower back rail, on the front and side seat rails and on the front legs. · The front seat rail is curved in a convex bow. · The side seat rails are gently serpentined to form a wider seat in the front. · The wide crest rail is scalloped and serpentined. · The chair stiles and back spindles are spool-turned, as is the front stretcher. · The chair stiles terminate in nicely splayed rear legs. · The crest rail height is 34” from the floor. · The crest rail height is 16 ” above the seat. · The crest rail width is 16 ¼" · The seat sits 18” from the floor. · The seat is 15 3/4” wide at the front, narrowing to 13" at the rear. · The seat depth is 14 ½”. These chairs are in as found condition. The surface patina is nicked, worn and flaked, as expected in chairs approaching 115-165 years of age. Chairs #1 and #3 are generally solid, chair #2 wobbles. The cane in chairs #1 and #3 is good; the cane in chair #2 has 3 small holes (see photo). These chairs may be picked up in Boylston, MA.
