John Lennon's 1958 Rickenbacker 325 Capri - natural finish

The Rickenbacker 325 was released in 1958 as the first of the Capri series of hollow body guitars and is the one most associated with John Lennon through the years. Purchased in Hamburg in 1960, it was finished in natural wood with a white pickguard and used a Kauffman Vibrola tailpiece. Used exclusively for the next four years in studio recordings and live shows, this is the guitar John was playing when The Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Following the group’s second visit to Hamburg in 1961, John had a Bigsby vibrato and bow tie bridge fitted, then by 1963 the 325 was painted black and fitted with a gold pickguard and a set of Hofner control knobs. In the 1970’s the guitar was returned to its natural wood finish and had a white pickguard fitted as illustrated here.
