A water-soluble vitamin, Vitamin B3 is also known as Niacin, Nicotinamide and Nicotonic Acid. The vitamin is not essential as the body can produce it if adequate levels of the amino acid Tryptophan are consumed. For every 1mg of Tryptophan used, 60mg of Niacin is produced. The discovery of the vitamin was in 1937 when scientist Conrad Elvehjem identified it was able to prevent pellagra or deficiency of Vitamin B3.
Niacin is available in many food sources including peanuts, trout, mackerels, wild rice, yeast, whole meal flour, turkey, sesame and sunflower seeds and lean red meats. Tryptophan sources include eggs, milk and cheese.
Vitamin B3 helps in the production and metabolism of energy in the body, by promoting metabolism and preventing feelings of fatigue. It also helps promote the healthy functioning of the nervous system and contributes to normal psychological functions. It aids in healthy skin, mucous membrane and blood flow.
