Breton Smock by Saint James

An authentic breton fisherman's smock, known in France as a vareuse. The fisherman's smock is made from cotton drill, similar to boat sail drill used for sailcloth. The cotton makes for a heavy weight garment (22oz / 630g) that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. Made in France by Saint James to old nautical formula, still to the same exacting standards required for durability in tough conditions.

Details

What completes the fisherman's smock is its authenticity. It has long sleeves and a square backed sailor collar. The wide open V front closes with a single button and loop. The button at the collar is on the inside rather than out - so not exposed to catching. The breast pocket is also on the inside, traditionally so fisherfolk could keep their tobacco dry from the salt sea spray and ocean waves. It is finished with strong double stitching and all edges including the collar are of double thickness.

About Saint James

Saint James clothing was born in 1889 in the town of it's namesake, located a few miles from the sea, and close to Mont Saint-Michel in Southern Normandy. The Saint James story began when the Legallais family started to spin and dye the local wool and sell the skeins and wool balls to the shops of Brittany and Normandy, later spinning the wool into shirts for the fishermen. Leon Legallais, the then mayor or Saint-James transformed this workshop into a large industry and in 1929 the company went public.
