How to take good care of your ear piercing?

Once you have done your ear piercing, there is several things you need to keep in mind.

The skin around a new piercing might be swollen, red and tender for a few days. The site might even bleed slightly. Ask your piercer what to expect and how to care for your piercing. To prevent infection and to encourage healing:

Clean your piercing with soap and water. Be sure to wash your hands before cleaning .

Avoid swimming. Stay out of pools, hot tubs, rivers, lakes and other bodies of water while your piercing is healing.

Don't touch a new piercing or twist the jewelry unless you're cleaning it. Keep clothing away from the piercing, too. Excessive rubbing or friction can irritate your skin and delay healing.

Keep the jewelry in place. Most piercings heal within about six weeks, but some might take several months or longer to heal. If you want to maintain the piercing, leave the jewelry in place during this time to keep the hole from closing. After the piercing heals, you might see an indentation or hole when you remove the jewelry.

If you think your piercing might be infected or you're concerned that your piercing isn't healing properly, contact your doctor. Prompt treatment can help prevent potentially serious complications.

How to protect your Earring jewelry?

1. Protect your work surface. Lay newspaper or cloth that you won't mind throwing away if it becomes stained.

2. Remove the backs from your earrings and arrange safely in the center of the workspace.

It is a good idea to organize your workspace by arranging the backs directly beneath their earrings; the gauge of the pins in each earring may be slightly larger or smaller than your other pairs.

3. Pick up one back at a time with tweezers and apply a thin coat of clear nail polish to each earring back. Paint all parts of the earring that touch your skin.

4. Apply a second coat once the first is dry. Allow each coat to dry for two to five minutes.

5. Poke the earring pins through their corresponding holes in the earring backs to ensure that the hole has not been sealed with polish. Dip a cotton swab in the nail polish remover to dab any earring backs in which the earring pins will not puncture.

6. Repeat this process every third time you wear the earrings. This will ensure that any polish rubbed off during wear is replaced, keeping your skin protected and rash-free.
