Kurt Cobain’s Fender Jag-Stang

The Jag-Stang was the result of a collaboration between Kurt Cobain and Fender Custom Shop master builder Larry Brooks. ‘I’ve always liked certain things about certain guitars but could never find the perfect mix of everything I was looking for’ said Kurt. To demonstrate what he had in mind he took pictures of a Mustang and a Jaguar, his two favourite Fender guitars, cut them in half and taped them together. The result had the upper contours of the Mustang and the lower lines of the Jaguar. Kurt requested two prototypes, one in Sonic Blue and the other in Fiesta Red. Both had alder bodies mated to 24-inch scale maple necks with rosewood fingerboards and vintage-style fretwire.  Exact copies of his favourite Mustang neck. They were fitted with stock Mustang hardware from Japan, a single-coil Texas Special neck pickup and a Dimarzio H-3 Humbucker. The blue Jag-Stang was shipped to Kurt for the 1993 In Utero tour, for which the H-3 was replaced with a Seymour Duncan JB and the bridge with a Tune-O-Matic by Nirvana’s guitar technician, Earnie Bailey. After Kurt’s death the following year Courtney Love gave it to REM’s guitarist, Peter Buck. The fiesta red Jag-Stang illustrated here was packed and ready for shipping when news of Kurt’s passing was announced. It now resides in the Fender Museum in Corona, California.
