EE Describes the 3600 (5000) series Marklin HO 3 Rail (aka 3R) track:

·      This 3600 (5000) series of track is part of the famous Maerklin Märklin Marklin HO 3 Rail (aka 3R) HO track system; the series was produced from the 1930s; its last year in the Marklin HO catalog was 1956

·      The center rail (“third rail”) is solid (it is NOT a series of studs)

·      The outer rails are either solid profile brass or hollow profile blackened steel

·      The standard straight track 5007 or 3600D1/1 is 7 1/8 inches long (180mm) and has 24 sleepers; (some very early variants have only 16 sleepers.)

·      These 3600 (5000) track that EE is selling is the 24 sleeper variety; We do sell the 16 sleeper variant elsewhere

·      This series is compatible with the 5100 series M stud track; they connect together and have the same roadbed height.

·      Some early Marklin HO locomotives have either “folded arc” or “spoon” type current pickups. These locos need to run on the this series solid third rail track, because their very short pickups need a continuous surface to ride on (they will snag on the studs of the 5100 series M stud track)

EE Explains the dual numbering system:

Maerklin Märklin Marklin introduced a new “4-digit” numbering system on January 1, 1957. This also coincides with the final years that the 3600 (5000) series track was available; just as the new numbers were introduced (i.e., the 5000, 5001, 5007, etc.) the solid third rail track was discontinued and thus many don’t know the track by the newer numbers. Here is a list showing the corresponding numbers:

About Eckert Engineering

Timothy Eckert started playing with Marklin Maerklin Märklin HO when he was 5 years old; his father's job with RCA sent him to Germany on a regular basis and he always came home with Märklin trains in his suitcase! One set of used Märklin passenger cars bought at a garage sale were some 351 cars, including two of the Kolls 351F version with the prohibited swastika on the sides. After 20 years of play, it was realized how collectible these cars were and they were traded for a large lot of K track, signals and cash. The Märklin signals were more important than the cash, as playing with and understanding them opened up the world of automatic train control (ATC) for Tim. He has spent much time since building signal controllers and playing with the finer points of ATC! Eckert Engineering was created with Märklin, Signals, and Digital Power Supplies (i.e., 600 watts of Digital Power!!) at the forefront. Tim's day job as an engineer in the nuclear commercial power industry helped give him the electrical engineering know-how necessary, and no, he does not glow at night. Now after 20 years, it’s time to start a slow turnover of Eckert Engineering to his children Andrew and Christy before the beer truck takes him out. Each day we have the apprentices learning from the master yet another aspect of the wonderful world of Märklin Trains!!
