It is beautifully crafted from pine wood and originates from Gansu Province in China, famous for its cabinets, trunks and simple storage chests often made from fir or pine wood colored in bold lacquers and decorated with bright paintings. Chinese cabinets were functional objects as well as works of art and came in various shapes, sizes, forms, and designs to hold a variety of objects. This lovely cabinet is square-cornered with two doors, and features the preserved painted remains of auspicious imagery. It is a showcase example of Chinese furniture distinguished by the beauty of the material and the simplicity of form reduced to flowing smooth lines and simple, extremely well constructed joinery. The measurements are 86.5 inches in length by 17.75 inches deep by 37 inches in height (219.7 cm by 45.0 cm by 93.8). It is in very good used condition, with wear consistent to a dating from the late-19th century. Importantly, it is an intact, original piece. It has a fine provenance coming from an important U.S. mid-west collection. This is a rare and beautiful piece, excellent for today’s décor, and a unique opportunity for a collector of fine antique furniture to adorn either an office or home, while savoring the culture, traditions and lifestyle of Chinese civilization.
