Reviews..

One of the best biogarphies of Kutuzov…… Although Parkinson wrote this book in a very young age back in 1976, he presented the real General Michail Illarionovich Kutuzov overturning many myths that were built about him. Of course the largest part of the book is devoted to Kutuzov's role in the 1812 campaign but there are also many interesting details about his eralier carreer and his successes (and terrible wounds) while fighting against the Turks at the Danube front. A well balanced and accurate source for anyone who wishes to learn more about the famous hero of Tolstoy's "War and Peace" and the menace of Napoleon's Grand Armee in the Russian steppes.

Straightforward and concise, and a fine undertaking…….Good biography about a remarkable general, who despite considerable rehabilitation of his image in recent decades, generally speaking still doesn't receive the appreciation that he deserves. The author - as did Tolstoy in "War and Peace," does an especially fine job of carefully detailing the intrigues and incompetence with which Kutuzov had to contend at every turn during the campaign of 1812 (the repeated smears by the English military attache, Wilson, were particularly irksome and tiresome), while patiently implementing his plan and manouevers which saved Russia and spelled the end of Napoleonic dominance in Europe.
