Vincent Black Shadow Series C
The Vincent Black Shadow was produced by Vincent HRD from 1948 with the
series ‘C’ being introduced the following year.
Developed from the Rapide, with Comet cams and an
increased compression ratio, producing 55bhp and allowing a top speed of 120mph
it became so popular that production numbers exceeded those of the Rapide.
Technically advanced, the 998cc v-twin engine was
used as a stressed member instead of being carried inside the frame and with
new features such as girdraulic forks, sprung rear sub-frame and a unit
construction engine, all weighing under 460lb (about
the same as a pre-war 500cc bike).
Philip Vincent was not prepared to compromise the
quality of his machines and in the face of escalating costs the company closed
its’ doors in 1955, by which time fewer than 1,700 Black Shadows had been
produced.
