Kurt Cobain's Guitars

Kurt famously used this 1990 Japanese Fender Stratocaster at the Reading Festival in 1991. It was known as the ‘Vandalism Strat’ due to the bumper sticker from the Feederz album Teachers in Space. The guitar was finally smashed in Paris in the spring of 1992.
The Jag-Stang was the result of a collaboration between Kurt and the Fender Custom Shop. To demonstrate what he wanted he took pictures of a Mustang and a Jaguar, cut them in half and taped them together.
The result had the upper contours of the Mustang and the lower lines of the Jaguar. The fiesta red Jag-Stang illustrated here was packed and ready for shipping when news of Kurt’s passing was announced.
Kurt first used this 60’s Mosrite Gospel Mk IV on stage at the Hollywood Palladium in August 1990. Originally a right-handed model, an extra strap button was added to allow Kurt to play it left-handed.  He also used white correction fluid to make the fret marker dots larger so they could be seen more easily on stage. Kurt eventually sold the guitar to a Los Angeles pawn shop and since his death it has been sold at auction, realising $131,000 in 2006.
The left-handed 1993 Fender Mustang shown here was custom built by Fender luthier Scott Zimmerman and played extensively by Kurt on Nirvana’s In Utero tour during 1993-94. Sonic blue Mustang #1 is on indefinite loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
Kurt’s main guitar during the Nevermind era was a heavily modified three-colour sunburst 1965 Fender Jaguar which is believed to have previously belonged to Martin Jenner, guitarist for Cliff Richard and The Everly Brothers.
Modifications include a tune-o-matic bridge, an extra volume knob and a Gibson-style toggle pickup switch with tape covering the disconnected on/off and phase switches.

The illustration of these famous guitars is original and has been produced by George Morgan following extensive research.
