B. B. King's Lucille

There have been many Lucille’s through the years. The original Lucille was an inexpensive Gibson L-30 archtop but today Lucille is widely recognized as a Gibson ES-355 style guitar.
B.B. King was performing in a nightclub in 1949 when a fight broke out, during which a fire started and everyone ran outside for safety, including King, but only when he’d reached safety outside did he realise he had left his guitar inside the burning building. Running back inside he managed to save his precious guitar from the flames. It wasn’t until the next day he heard the fight that had set off the fire had been over a woman and her name was Lucille.
King was so taken by these events that he named all his future guitars after her, “to remind me never to do a thing like that again.”

The illustration on this card was hand drawn by George Morgan and is not a photograph.
