      1. SCROOGE
This is the classic Charles Dickens story "A Christmas Carol." Ebeneezer Scrooge, an old miserable, miserly, unsympathetic man, is visited by ghosts on Christmas Eve, and sees the errors in his ways and what would follow if he doesn't change. This early, taking-picture version of the story places an emphasis on the nastyness of Scrooge, in contrast to the general niceness of Bob Cratchit and his family. Stars Seymour Hicks, Donald Calthrop, Robert Cochran, Mary Glynne, Garry Marsh, Oscar Asche. 63 min?, B & W, 1935.

      2. BEYOND TOMORROW
This is an unusual story; not quite a love story, and not quite a ghost story. Three aging, wealthy New York businessmen, in order to make their own lives less lonely, invite two strangers into their home on Christmas Eve. The strangers, a nurse and a visiting Texan, become friends, and soon fall in love and marry. The Texan, a cheerful and trusting sort, finds a way to make a living as a singer, but soon is led astray by a devious homewrecker. Meanwhile, the three businessmen die but remain as ghosts with the goal of restoring the two lover's marriage. The acting, story, and direction are first rate, and although it's an odd choice to be included with other Christmas movies, it is nonetheless a satisfying and thought-provoking film. Stars Harry Carey, C. Aubrey Smith, Charles Winninger, Maria Ouspenskaya, Helen Vinson, Rod La Rocque, Richard Carlson, Jean Parker. 84 min, B & W, 1940.
