Surf and roll in the tradition of the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and Dick Dale, if you can imagine that, played by two wacky brothers whose easy way with traditional roots music is absolutely charming. So charming, these distant relatives of Holly himself have friends like Randy Fuller (Bobby Fuller Four), Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets and guitarist Deke Dickerson guesting on originals like the Merseybeat "She's Gonna Leave"; there's also a hang-ten to their Southern California retro-rockin' fellows, "Battle of the Bands," and the old Bob Wills song "Never Knew." (review by Denise Sullivan, AMG)

  • Stellar contemporary rockabilly-pop ala Everlys, Bobby Fuller
The Everly Brothers' singing has been a primary source for a lot of modern harmony duos, but the Sprague Brothers' combination of Everly styled harmonies, Buddy Holly West Texas twang and vintage 1960s Bobby Fuller surf-and-drag is one of the most unique takes yet. Their music has the rhythmic kick of rockabilly, the Beatlesque melodies of sunshine rock, and the chiming guitars of power pop.

This 1999 debut isn't nearly as gimmicky as the cover might suggest. Their guitar-and-drums duets may play just fine on the hipster lounge circuit, but for their LP they recruited notable friends to fill out their sound, including Randy Fuller, Brian "Shorty" Poole, and Deke Dickerson as bass players, and Jeremy Wakefield on pedal steel. Their original music is incredibly catchy and accessible, and so hypnotizingly catchy that you'd barely notice "Never Knew" and "I'm Ready" are covers (of Bob Wills and Fats Domino, respectively).

How they continue to fly so far below the radar, despite exposure on NPR and in the pages of Rolling Stone, Playboy and other cultural outlets, is anyone's guess. Get this CD and breakout your own epidemic of Spraguemania! (Customer review)
