5 Famous Gibson Les Paul Guitars #1

Pete Townshend used Letraset numbers to identify different tuning for various songs. In 1973 Pete switched permanently to the

Les Paul Deluxe and by 1975 had settled on a fixed collection for the stage. This early prototype #8 shows the DiMarzio humbucker in the middle position and additional switches providing a two-way tap for the Dual Sound and three-way selection.

Acquired in 1968, ‘Pearly Gates’ has featured on all of ZZ Top’s records. It was the seminal 1966 album Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton that set Billy Gibbons on a quest to own a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard like the one Clapton is seen holding on the disc’s rear sleeve.

Peter Frampton was reunited with this 1954 Gibson Les Paul Custom in 2012 after it was thought to have been destroyed in a plane crash en route to Panama in 1980. The weatherbeaten guitar surfaced thanks to some fans who located it on the island of Curacao.

Produced originally with it’s traditional Black Beauty finish, Mick Ronson had the top of this 1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom taken back to

natural in his search for high-end response. Learning that stripping the top off an acoustic served that purpose well, Mick applied the same logic to his electric and removed the gold-plated nickel covers from his humbucker’s for the same response.

Replacing Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1966, Peter Green was looking for a new guitar when he found this1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard in Selmer’s music store. Peter’s recording career was launched in 1967 with A Hard Road, where his blues-rock style and the sound of his Les Paul Standard can be heard distinctively on The Supernatural. Leaving the Bluesbreakers later that year with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie to form his own band, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.
