Die Formel 1 Saison 1980 stand technisch ganz im Zeichen der Wing-Cars, die mit ihren seitlichen Schürzen den Ground Effect noch einmal deutlich erhöhten. Während sich die Kurvengeschwindigkeiten und die Querbeschleunigung deutlich steigerten, reduzierten sich die Rundenzeiten im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um bis zu drei Sekunden. Noch dominierten die 3-Liter Saugmotoren von Cosworth die neue Turbo-Generation von Renault und Ferrari. Bei Williams hatte Patrick Head mit dem FW07b ein echtes Siegerauto für die Saison 1980 entwickelt. Der Kampf um den Formel 1 WM-Titel 1980 wurde gegen Saisonende zu einem Duell zwischen dem Australier Alan Jones im Williams und dem jungen Brasilianer Nelson Piquet im Brabham. Beim Großen Preis von England in Brands Hatch siegte Alan Jones elf Sekunden vor seinem schärfsten Rivalen. Doch vor den letzten beiden GP führte Nelson Piquet in der WM immer noch mit einem Punkt Vorsprung. Mit zwei Siegen in Montreal und Watkins Glen bei gleichzeitigen Ausfällen Piquets wurde Alan Jones am Ende Weltmeister.

The 1980 Formula 1 season was marked by the wing car constructions and their increased ground effect and aerodynamic efficiency. While corner speeds went up lateral acceleration started to worry the drivers. On some tracks lap times went down by three seconds compared to the year before and the danger of a stalling ground effect was omnipresent. The aspirated 3-litre Cosworth V8 engines still held the upper hand over the new turbo engines of Renault and Ferrari and Patrick Head had constructed a perfect car around the V8 for Williams in 1980. The whole season saw a fierce battle between Australian Alan Jones in the Williams FW07b and young Brazilian Nelson Piquet racing the Brabham BT49. Jones had won the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch eleven seconds ahead of Piquet but when the European races were over after Imola Piquet was still leading by one point over Jones in the championship. While Nelson Piquet retired in Montreal and Watkins Glen Alan Jones drove the Williams FW07b to victory in both races to become F1 World Champion of 1980.
