The Edge’s 1976 Gibson Explorer

In 1978 The Edge was on a family vacation in New York City and having recently joined a new group he was looking for a new guitar.

He saw something that he fell in love with when he walked into Stuyvesant Music and this second run 1976 Gibson Explorer cost him $248.40.

The Edge used it on every studio recording and nearly every U2 tour from 1978 but as the guitar’s value steadily increased it was eventually substituted when touring.

In 2008 the auction of this Gibson Explorer raised $240,000 for Music Rising, helping to replace damaged and destroyed instruments in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The illustration of this famous guitar is original and has been produced by George Morgan following extensive research.
