Seamus Justin Heaney (1939-2013), Northern Irish-born poet, translator, editor, lecturer, and critic, educated at Queen's University, Belfast, authored more than 20 volumes of poetry and criticism, and edited several popular anthologies. In 1995 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. From 1981 to 1997 he was a professor at Harvard University and served as its Poet in Residence from 1988 to 2006, while from 1989 to 1994 he was also the Professor of Poetry at Oxford. He had numerous honors and awards, including the Lifetime Recognition Award from the Griffin Trust For Excellence in Poetry in 2012, the year before his death. He is considered by many to have been one of the finest poets of his age, and perhaps the finest Irish poet since Yeats.
