This Pattern was inspired by the art work
devoted to Christmas: The word Christmas originated as a compound meaning
" Christ’s Mass". It is derived from the Middle English-Christemasse
and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038.
"Cristes" is from Greek Christos and "mæsse" is from Latin
missa (the holy mass). In Greek, the letter X (chi), is the first letter of
Christ, and it, or the similar Roman letter X, has been used as an abbreviation
for Christ since the mid-16th century. Hence, Xmas is sometimes used as an
abbreviation for Christmas.
Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas,
Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or simply "Santa", is a figure who,
in many Western cultures, brings gifts to the homes of the good children during
the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve, December 24 or on his
Feast Day, December 6 (Saint Nicholas Day). The legend may have part of its
basis in hagiographical tales concerning the historical figure of gift giver
Saint Nicholas. A nearly identical story is attributed by Greek and Byzantine
folklore to Basil of Caesarea. Basil's feast day on January 1 is considered the
time of exchanging gifts in Greece.
