Larry Grossman's

New York Central System 1934

The COMMODORE VANDERBILT

Full 4-Color Metal Sign

Model No. S4S5137

The United States was recovering from the Great Depression in the 1930's and the railroads decided that it was time to create a new impetus to increase travel. Streamlining was the latest advent in industrial design and plans were made in 1934 by the New York Central System to produce their first streamlined locomotive, which would be named after the founder of the railroad, Commodore Vanderbilt. It is an ironic fact that Vanderbilt, who had been seriously injured in a train wreck, disliked railroads intensely but later went on to establish the NYC and shape railroad history.

The design of the Commodore Vanderbilt was the creation of Carl F. Kantola, whose career at the NYC spanned 47 years. NYC Hudson No. 5344 was selected to be used as the prototype and was suitably modified to accept its streamlined shroud, which had been developed by the Case Institute of Technology. In December 1934, the project was complete. On December 27, 1934, the Commodore Vanderbilt was first exhibited at Grand Central Station and then it began an exhibition tour of major cities on the NYC system. It was then placed in service hauling the 20th Century Limited.

Many other railroads scrambled to streamline their locomotives, however, the NYC has the distinction of being the first US carrier to do so. Little is known about any performance changes which resulted from the streamlining, but it can speculated that the drag reduction probably resulted in a fuel savings.

About the Artist

Los Angeles native, Larry Grossman began his professional career in the early ‘60’s at age 15 when he purchased his first airbrush.   Influenced by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, he began painting wild designs on T-shirts and selling them at events like "The Teen-Age Fair" at the Hollywood Palladium, and at numerous hot rod and custom car shows also while occasionally working for one of his heroes, George Barris, “The King of the Kustomizers”.   The income from this work enabled Larry, in 1964, to buy his first car, a red, "Vette" powered, ‘29 Ford hot rod.

Moving from L.A. to Berkeley in the psychedelic 60’s, he studied film and photography, graduating from the California College of the Arts, where he later taught film animation.   During this period, he also owned several successful businesses, creating silk screened t-shirts, leather clothes, and ceramic jewelry, all of which were sold internationally.

In 1981 the Disney Studios enticed Larry back to L.A. to work as a designer on their landmark first computerized film, “TRON”.   Freelancing in the 80’s and 90’s he created many logos, illustrations, and merchandise designs for major studios including Disney, Warner Bros., and DreamWorks.   He also illustrated three album covers for legendary musician Frank Zappa, and one for Hank Williams Jr. as well as T-shirt designs and posters for IN-N-OUT Burger and Bob's Big Boy.

Partly as a result of his working on TRON, Larry became enthralled with the creative potential of the computer and by the 90′s had retired his airbrush.   He soon developed a unique process, combining digital airbrushing with his own photography.   The results are dynamic scenes that look “real”, but which never actually occurred ...…except in Larry’s vivid imagination!

Larry’s work has been exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide, including the famed Petersen Automotive Museum, The National Hot Rod (NHRA) Museum, The National Automobile Museum, the Gene Autry Western Museum, and the Museum of Neon Art.   Coming full circle, Larry recently created the cover art for the final book on his old pal George Barris.
