A proud wearer Of HMT vintage watches myself, I am delighted to be able to offer this absolutely stunning KAJAL Automatic for sale on e-bay.

You’ve never heard of HMT? That’s a pity. It is perhaps the world’s most overlooked manufacturer of high-quality watches.

India achieved independence in 1947, and its government, headed by prime-minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964; pm of India, 1947-64), was keen for India to become a modern industrial nation.

In 1953, the Hindustan Machine Tool Company (HMT) was set up, to help provide India with the machinery and tools necessary for industrialisation.

In 1961, HMT, in association with the Citizen Watch Company Of Japan, established a watch-making division at Bangalore. Nehru himself was present at the release of the first batch of its watches.

The initiative was extremely successful. HMT, with its very reliable, reasonably-priced watches, became the, ‘Timekeepers to the Nation’. HMT watches were widely worn, and often given as gifts on birthdays and other special occasions. It is estimated that 115 million HMT watches were produced.

Unfortunately, HMT was slow to move to production of quartz watches, while in the 1980s and 1990s, competition from affordable foreign-made watches increased.

HMT lost market share, and, in 2016, ceased to make watches.

However, perhaps as a result, there is now a growing awareness of the high quality and desirability of HMT products.

With its gorgeous black case, and gold face, this beautiful example is in very good condition, and its signed, 21-jewels, automatic movement is working well.

It has a day/date function.

The case diameter is 36mm, and it measures 42mm from lug-tip to lug-tip.

The watch is on a smart, black, 18mm leather strap.

It is a watch that anybody would enjoy wearing.

Although a man's watch, it would look equally good on a woman.

I mail to any part of the world, and am happy to combine postage.

Just let me know if you would like to see more photos, or have more information about this super watch.
