The Tapesries of the History of St Stephen is an exceptional set of twelve tapestries depicting twenty-three scenes of life, martyrdom and miracles post mortem Etienne, patron saint of the cathedral of Auxerre. From his election among deacons until his burial in Rome, episodes from the life of St Stephen are described in rich detail evocative compositions, guided by legends woven at the bottom of each scene. Architecture, furniture, characters dressed in the fashion of the time, animals and monsters used the illustration of a story where the wonderful intervenes in various forms until the final episode where the holy deacon Lawrence makes up the body in his tomb Etienne.
