About the Author

Reviews

You’ll LOVE it !! … I know this is an old book, originally published in 1964, but if you have a cat, you'll love it. I'm thrilled that I was able to find copies because this has been my standard gift to new cat owners as long as I can remember. It helps explain a cat's behavior and makes you laugh out loud when your cat does what the narrating cat describes. You'll find out about the silent miaow every cat uses when it need you do something for him. Try it, you'll love it.

THIS is for all cat owners… More whimsy and magic from Paul Gallico. I read this many many years ago and loved it, and recently was inspired to order a copy for my children to read. The book arrived quickly and in very nice condition, and since we have three cats the boys could testify to the accurate depictions in the book and greatly enjoyed it. One to save for the grandkids!!

YES! We belong to cats… This is a wonderful little book about what really goes on in a cat's mind. Written, er, translated from the feline by a sports writer who really did not like cats that much, it is a story about the take over and training of a human companion from a strictly feline point of view. The instructions and maxims given in this text will instruct a wise cat or kitten in the ways of human - feline interaction, and how to make the most of it. What is scary, is that the things that the late Cica instructs her readers in is all too true...
I give this book a rating of six out of the five possible!
Please note, the book is a little bit long in the tooth now, and a few of the things contained within might be a bit out of date or passe.

WONDERFUL black and white photos ……. This narrative is written from a cat's point of view to explain how to manage one's human. Occasionally cat-like typing makes the text hard to read but lends a delightful touch of authenticity. Wonderful black-and-white photos illustrate the cat's description of how to monopolize attention, get fed at the table, raise a litter of kittens, and many other salient topics. Enjoyable even on repeated reading.

When in doubt  - wash…..  deserved classic with wonderful insight into the minds of humans and cats...
I find myself wondering if Mr. Gallico interviewed some of the cats I've owned over the years. (I have owned dogs, too, and I think they are in accord - at least in my household).
How to get someone to get out of your favorite chair?  "Sit at his feet and make a smell."
So THAT's where mine got that behavior. Grrr!
(Read it - very good!)

FIVE STARS ...... Deeeelightful - for cat lovers everywhere

Have you ever been adopted by a stray? The Silent Miaow is is a how-to manual for homeless cats on finding homes. It's authored by one with personal experience! Each chapter addresses each phase of training the new family to provide new kitty's every wish. The clever instrucions are accompanied by irresistible illustrations.

This is a cute little book. ..It was written by the point of view of the cat and how to "manage" your humans. Great pictures and a fun read.

I love Paul Gallico. .... I also am an ailurophile (a word used several times in this charming book). I loved the premise of the book - that a housecat used her owners' electric typewriter to write a manual for kittens on how to take over a household - and keep it.

The gender differences described are a little - um - dated, for example references to how women and cats are alike in that they manipulate men into providing them treats, or Gallico's discovery that the cat in question is female, causing him to state, "...the author reveals herself to be a 'she,' though even without this admission the sheer bitchery contained in many passages of this illuminating textbook could be ascribed only to the distaff side."

However, most of the book is very funny and apt for anyone who's ever owned or known a cat.

Even more charming than the cat's instruction to kittens on the various issues of note is the accompanying photo diary of the cat suspected to be the "writer." I would recommend the book just for the pictures and captions. Taken by photographer and cat owner Suzanne Szasz, they really bring the lessons of the book to life.

Marvellous Reading!
