This Bulgarian Rose (Rosa Damascena) is extracted by steam distillation. Production of rose and rose oil in Bulgaria-Kazanlak has started 16th century and today the region is the biggest rose oil exporter. Around 4000 kg of fresh roses is distilled to get just 1 kg of high quality rose oil.

There are two main Rose Oil types; Rose ottos are extracted through steam distillation, while rose absolutes are obtained through solvent extraction or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, with the absolute being used more commonly in perfumery. Even with their high price and the advent of organic synthesis, rose oils are still perhaps the most widely used essential oil in perfumery.

The essence has a very strong odor, but is pleasant when diluted and used for perfume. Attar of roses was once made in India, Persia, Syria, and Bulgaria. The Rose Valley in Bulgaria, near the town of Kazanlak, is among the major producers of attar of roses in the world.

By method of aromatherapy the rose oil helps keeping the nervous system in good condition, sharpen the senses, strengthens the mind, removes headache. The rose oil is widely used in perfumery, aromatherapy, cosmetics and medicine. It has anti inflammatory properties and is used in making of many creams, lotions, soaps and other cosmetics.

Bulgarian rose oil is the most expensive and most demanded perfume essential oil on the international market.
