"Recent Works," by Shinya Nakazoto, privately published in Japan in 2009, 68 pages, large softcover, 11.5" by 8". Obscure self-published book showcasing three separate series by young contemporary Japanese photographer Nakazoto, whose work bears the distinction of uniqueness, an unusual amalgam of the vintage and the contemporary. One series, entitled "Things Scattered," presents a series of painterly still lifes contrasting dark forms with plaster-like hues, while an older series, entitled "After Atget," presents contemporary albumen prints evoking nostalgic Parisian street scenes and interiors. What makes the work so refreshingly unique and unusual is its illusory nature - these seemingly antiquated prints bear signs of contemporary culture visible only on close inspection, from imbedded graffiti prints to contemporary signage and graphics. Finely printed and designed, almost entirely comprised of full-page color plates. Very impressive work, poised, one hopes, for greater recognition. In excellent condition.
