James Davis, the soloist on this record, is thirteen. He has been a chorister in Worcester Cathedral Choir for four years, having previously been a member of the Cathedral Voluntary Choir. A Worcester boy, James attends the King's School, where the choristers are educated. He plays the piano, organ and oboe, and has begun to compose and arrange, mostly in a "popular" style. He became the first Elgar Scholar in the Cathedral Choir, an award made by the Elgar Foundation for "outstanding musical contribution to the life of the cathedral" in which the composer spent many happy hours.

James was the principal treble soloist in the choir for some time, singing at recitals at home and on the continent, at broadcasts and on television, including a performance of Mendelssohn's "Hear my prayer"; he was also a soloist at the 1984 Three Choirs Festival in Worcester. He appears as soloist on other Cathedral Choir records.
