Pasteli - Sesame Bar - is based on sesame and honey. Honey and
sesame were the main ingredients of the nutritional habits of the ancient
Greeks, who had invented different dishes in order to use these two

The common name of
Pasteli in ancient years was Sisamis. According to Aristofanis Sisamis and
Sisamous were symbols of fertility and were offered in the Marriage guests and
especially the bride, after the wedding ceremony when she was passing the main
gate of the house. Pasteli seems to have the same use in Byzantine Times as it
is mentioned in “ To kata Rothanthi and Dosiklia” TH420/Theodoros Prodromos. It
is unknown when the name changed to Pasteli. Other versions about the
provenance of the word are the verbs cover and sprinkle that is the making
procedure of many pastries based on Pasteli.
