  The Story

  Leading up to the 1950s, many women wore pants in private around the house. But it wasn't until they were depicted on some of the era's most prominent female TV stars that they went outside the home. One of the most popular styles was the cigarette pant, named for the narrow leg shape. Usually classic black, the silhouette (paired with a black turtleneck) became a staple of beatnik fashion and a symbol of cool sophistication. Cigarettes have since gone out of style, but the pant firmly remains.
