EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF VINTAGE BOYD POTTERY

Presenting a superb vintage Australian Pottery cup and saucer created and signed Martin Boyd, the pottery established by Guy Boyd with the help of his brother David Boyd.

The exterior of the cup has been masterfully handpainted with a well executed scene depicting a Native Aboriginal male in the Australian landscape. The scantily clad Aboriginal is depicted atop a grassy cliff overlooking blue waters with earthy red mountains in the background. A brushed blue sky completes the rather idyllic scene. Inscribed sgraffito details adds fabulous definition to the figure.

The handpainted scene appears atop a cream-toned pottery body. The interior of the cup has been finished in a pastel pink glaze. The original matching saucer is simply decorated with brushed bands of green and blue perfectly complimenting the detailed handpainted design and unifying the pieces.

SIZE: The petite tea-sized cup stands approx 58mms tall, measures 60mms in diameter at the top rim, excluding the handle and 85mms in width including the handle. The saucer measures 140mms in diameter and stands 20mms tall.

CONDITION: This set is presented in excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, stains or repairs. There is light and fine overall crazing, mostly to the saucer, as is to be expected with pieces of this vintage but mentioned for complete accuracy. This set has been very well cared for and presents spectacularly.

MARKS: The base of the cup is beautifully signed with an inscribed signature "Martin Boyd Australia" along with the black brushed initial "S" (perhaps the decorator). The base of the saucer is marked with the same brushed initial alone.

This is one of three matching sets we currently have listed for sale. We are always more than happy to combine postage to help you save and rest assured, all items are professionally packaged to the highest of standards!

  • This exquisite set would make a fine addition to any Australian pottery, Boyd pottery or Aboriginal design collection
  • A fabulous gift idea for the discerning admirer of quality vintage objects of sheer beauty
