The stein depicted in this auction was made by the Matthias Girmscheid firm from Germany.  The stein is Pottery and Relief, the size is 0.25 L, with a pewter lid with a very nice finial and thumb. The form number is 314.  The stein is two tone in  color and is called Lions with Shields. Founded in 1884 in the town of Höhr, the firm of Matthias Girmscheid merged briefly with the firm of Gilles & Sohn in the 1920s, no doubt in an effort to survive in Germany’s difficult post-war economy. However, by 1930 the partnership had dissolved and the two companies again began producing independently. The Girmscheid factory is still in operation today, producing a wide range of salt-glazed stoneware products.
