I organized this book so that it can be read, and the technique applied in a short period of time. The first part of this book furnishes theory, method, and application for the road drawing technique. This is followed by several sample road drawings. These examples are intended to illustrate the kinds of road drawings a clinician or layperson may encounter. However, the reader should keep in mind that each person is unique, hence there is no single drawing or element of a drawing that will serve as a typical example.  Before continuing further into this book, I invite the reader to create their own road drawing. By doing so, the clinician or layperson will gain validation of, and greater personal insight into, the road drawing directive. The method and materials needed to complete the task are outlined in chapters two and three.  It is my hope that the road drawing technique will help both the reader and his or her clients come to know themselves as they use the narrative quality of the road motif to acquire and bring to consciousness life experiences and events. It is the story-like nature of roads that allows individuals to convey to themselves and to others who they are now, how they came to be, and where they think their lives may be going in the future. Lastly, I am confident the reader will discover how the narrative nature of roads can be used to help clients see more possibilities ahead of them, provide ideas for new actions, as well as motivate and instilling hope.
