Inspired by the dystopian sci-fi of J.G Ballard, and the post industrial greyscale landscape of late 70s Manchester, Joy Division's music was both deeply personal and at the same time utterly unknowable, both sonically dense and angularly brittle.
Equally iconic is designer Peter Savile's cover artwork. Based on an image of pulsar star CP1919, it has become the most famous and endearing image in post-punk.
