The Italian Job - Austin Mini Cooper S Mk1

Following the 1959 launch of the Austin and Morris Mini's, the combination of a practical small four seater with front wheel drive became a revelation and their sales soon began to soar when celebrities including Peter Sellers and Twiggy were seen driving them.

Enthusiasts were catered for in 1961 with the Cooper and again in 1963 with the release of the Cooper S. Competition success came soon after as the agile and now quick little saloon began a long period of success in circuit racing. But it was in difficult road conditions that the Cooper S excelled as it went on to win the Monte Carlo Rally from 1964 – 1967. This combination of agility and power made the Cooper S ideal for use in The Italian Job. The three Minis race through shopping arcades, up the sail-like roof of the Torino Palavela, around a Fiat factory rooftop test track, down church steps, through a large sewer pipe and eventually up a loading ramp into the back of a moving coach.

Released in 1969, this movie has achieved cult status and considered highly evocative of 1960's London and the era in Britain as a whole particularly for the red, white and blue stars illustrated here.
